Goal Getters at Makybe

Goal Getters at Makybe

AVID Student Success Week is an annual event where Makybe students showcase their hard work in all areas of the curriculum. During AVID Student Success Week our community takes part in several events including:

  • Makybe Spelling Bee
  • Makybe Maths Fact Challenge
  • Careers Dress Up Day
  • Open Night
  • Wellness Fair
  • Alumni Presentations
  • Classroom Visits
  • Fully SIC Grand Final

In the lead up to Student Success Week our whole school takes part in a hashtag competition. Each classroom brainstorms what helps us be successful at Makybe Rise, in the local community, and in the world. Students and teachers use these ideas to imagine a new theme for Student Success Week by creating a hashtag. Each class submits their favourite hashtag, and the winning hashtag is chosen by the Executive Team. The chosen hashtag becomes the theme for Student Success Week. In 2023 the winning hashtag came Mr. Webster’s Year 5/6 class #GoalGetters.

What is a #GoalGetter?

#GoalGetters are not only people who consistently set goals and work hard to achieve them, but they also encourage others to strive for their goals and not back down when there are setbacks.

What Do #GoalGetters Do?

To be a #GoalGetter you must be persistent. Being persistent means that you keep on going even in the face of challenges. For example, if my goal is to do my homework, but I know I have football training during the week. I can show persistence by finding a solution. I can do my homework before or after training or use my iPad to set reminders for specific times during the week when I know I am not as busy.

If you are stuck on completing your goal (for example I find a tricky question on my homework assignment) first thing to do is take a different approach, if one way isn’t working for you, find a different way to complete your task. If that doesn’t work, ask for help, it’s not embarrassing to ask for help. If you don’t know or understand, always ask for help. That’s what #GoalGetters do!

What is a SMART Goal and How Can I Set One?

Throughout the school year students at Makybe set SMART goals to help them be #GoalGetters. A SMART goal is a goal that is:

Specific

Measurable

Achievable

Relevant

Time Bound

When you set a SMART goal, it must be specific, for example I want to finish my homework, that’s not specific enough, what is the homework about? Why do you need to accomplish this goal?  The next box you must tick is measurable. How will you know when you have achieved your goal? The next one is relevant and this one is very important. How will your goal benefit you? For example, if I said I want to stand on my head for 2 minutes that most likely won’t benefit me. Instead think of something useful like getting your homework submitted on time, and the last box you must fill is time bound, how long will you have to finish your goal? For example, If the homework is due by Friday, I would say that I have by Friday to complete my goal.
