Student Success Week
Term 3 came to a fantastic close as our Makybe students celebrated their achievements and talents in the annual Student Success Week. The theme ‘We Rise to the Challenge’ gave students the opportunity to reflect on their successes and to imagine their future accomplishments.
On Monday morning, there was excitement and anticipation in the air as students prepared for class visits. Every student from Kindy to Year 5 visited the year level they will be in 2021. This was a great way to launch Student Success Week and the classrooms looked spectacular with the students’ work on display. Students browsed the classrooms and thought about how they will rise to the new challenges they will meet next year. Students in Year 6 visited the Kindy classes and thought about how much they have progressed since they have been in Primary School. It was great hearing students discuss the similarities and differences between their year level and classroom. Thank you to all the teachers and students for the effort they put in to making their rooms showcase ready.
There were many smiling faces entering school on Tuesday, with staff and students wearing their costumes for the P&C Career Dress Up Day. This gave everyone the opportunity to consider what they want to do when they grow up. The students enjoyed engaging in conversations about future aspirations, and the steps they would need to take to achieve their goals. Thank you to all the parents for getting behind this event, it would not be possible without you!
On Tuesday and Wednesday, students gathered in the undercover area to watch the Maths Facts Challenge and the Spelling Bee finals. Every student participated in the earlier heats, and so they appreciated the level of challenge faced by our finalists. The cheering and clapping from the audience are exactly what we would expect from our Makybe students and the contestants felt very supported. Well done to everyone who participated and congratulations to our 2020 Maths Fact champion Colton, and our 2020 Spelling champion Emily C!! Well done to Mr Webster for hosting this highly successful event.
Staff, students and invited guests all came together on Thursday, to loudly cheer on the students performing in the much-anticipated Makybe Rise Fully SIC Performance Festival. We were all highly entertained by the six finalists. What an incredibly talented group of students we have at Makybe Rise! Mrs Kearney was overwhelmed this year, with the number of students who put themselves forward for this event that has become such a cornerstone of Student Success Week. Well done to all the students who auditioned, and congratulations to our first-place winners- Noah and Lachlan for their energetic performance on drums and guitar, Grace and Bella who were second with an Acro dance and Patrick who came third on drums. A fantastic performance by all, including Mrs Kearney who spent many hours working with students to make it all possible.
The artistic talents of our students were also celebrated in the Art on the Rise event whereby the Makybe Art Room became a colourful gallery for several days. Thank you to Mr Gorman and his team of helpers who framed a magnificent collection of our students’ artwork to put on display. Every child had the opportunity to visit the gallery showcase during the week and this was captured by Mr Gorman in his Art on the Rise video. This video also provided students the opportunity to discuss their art and the techniques they have been learning. You can view our students’ amazing artwork in our Front Office in Term 4.
Our students were proud to showcase their achievements for their parents in both digital and paper form this year. They had opportunities in class and at home to share what they were most proud of for this year and to discuss what makes them successful. We had great feedback from many proud parents about their child’s growth and achievement. We also appreciate the positive feedback from parents about our Makybe staff members who go above and beyond in educating and inspiring our students.
This year our annual Wellness Fair was held in virtual form lead by Mrs Garwood and the Wellness Team. Our students took the lead with this project, planning interview questions and meeting with people from key support agencies and local businesses that help us stay physically and mentally healthy. These interviews were released each day to keep our community informed. Well done to all the students involved, this was a great learning experience! Thank you to Mr Fernandez for his technical expertise in editing the footage and to Baldivis Secondary College for lending us the equipment to make it all possible.
On Friday, to show appreciation on behalf of the parent community, the Makybe Rise P&C and School Board treated our Makybe staff members to a scrumptious morning tea. This was gratefully received by everyone and provided us with the opportunity to come together to celebrate an awesome week!
Thank you to all the staff, students and families for their active engagement and participation in Student Success Week 2020.
